Adjustment Bureau

INTRO

Watching the Adjustment Bureau in depth I realised that there is much more to a movie than what I thought like how one shot could take fifty tries justs to get that one frame. The director (George Nolf) represents the idea of fate by showing that you can control your own fate and it is not decided by the chairman which is what they want you to think so David finding his way out of that mind set with alise is very ambitious. The first technique that I will cover in this scene is the setting/scene which is where the scenes take place and the weather, so pretty much the environment around the characters in the scene. The second technique is the lighting which in this scene almost has a gray tinge to it, but it has other features as well which will be explained in this paragraph. The third technique that I am going to use is the characters costumes which becomes a main part because of Harry’s top hat. These three techniques I believe will sum the scene up well to show how Nolf uses different film techniques to communicate his ideas to a wide range of people.

PARAGRAPH 1   SETTING/SCENE

The start of the scene is set on top of a skyscraper above all of the other buildings making David and Alice the center of attention. The weather around the characters at the start of this scene is partly windy and an over cloud day putting a gloomy feel to the position that they are in, but gradually after David and Alice kiss the camera moves to a high shot overlooking New York’s buildings and then the clouds part bringing in a stream of sunlight gleaming on to the buildings with the wind stopping as well, lighting up the whole mood of the scene. Next wit moves back to David and Alice standing, confused with what just happened and what thomson is explaining them and are still shook after Harry told them the good news that they could be together. The next frame is of David and Alice walking along the street with the clouds back over the sky but there is also lots of people with hats on showing that anyone could be watching you when they don’t even have to because everyone is forced to stay in that mindset when they should do what they want to do.

PARAGRAPH 2 COSTUME

The costumes in this ending scene may not be something that people look on as a big thing but it actually it is because if the Adjustment Bureau agents didn’t have their hats they would be just normal people. For the whole of this scene David is wearing a long sleeve white shirt like something that you would wear under a suit and a fancy black watch, and his bottom half is black suit pants with some formal shoes on and all of his t-shirt is wet because they had just came from the street were it was raining, but the main part of his costume is Harry’s top hat, giving him the powers that all the other agents have. The top hat gets taken off David after Harry shows them there new destiny in the book so that David can’t transport through the doors. Alise, on the other hand is wearing a black dress with a split down her chest and also has a baggy gold necklace and dangling earrings, making her outfit look expensive. The costumes in this film are very typical New York like even if you went there today you would probably see people seeing the same clothes.

PARAGRAPH 3 LIGHTING

The start of this scene is cloudy, dark and gloomy outside and then when David pulls Alice back into the hallway at the top of the building it is dark and there are lights on each side. When they get back out onto the top of the skyscraper and kiss the clouds part bringing in a gush of furious light having good lighting for the last roof top frame and also showing that the chairman is there pretty much telling David and Alice that something good is about to happen which they made happen which goes back to my main idea that the Adjustment Bureau dont decide what you do, you have your own decisions to make. When the two of them are walking along the street, it has the same light as at the start, so almost like a weak gray filter. The overall lighting in this film pretty much tells us what’s going to happen like how the sun came out when something good happen and was dark when they got caught at the start of the scene, I think they used the lighting very well not in just this scene but the whole movie.

CONCLUSION
These three techniques that I have explained should put a good idea in your head of how fate is your own decision and not decided by the chairman.

Hi Sam,

Be careful that you do not tell too much of the plot in your essay. You need to focus on each technique, not the storyline of the scene. Tell us how the technique is used and only offer enough explanation of the storyline to give us context.

You need to ensure that you are connecting each of your paragraphs to your important idea. Link the observations you have made about each technique to your important idea.

Be sure to discuss why this idea is important. Why do you think viewers should pay attention to it? Why do you think the director has drawn our attention to it.
