Boy initial response

Write your response to the film using the folling points:

1.write a breif plot overview

2. discuss a character that you found interesting and describe why they view.

3. Write about a scene that stood out to you. Why was it of interest?

4.what message do you think the director tiki wiatiti was conveying in the text. Use an example to support your explanation.

5. write about a cinematography technique that was of intres to you. why was it effective/ surprising/ distracting….

6. Give your reflections on the setting why do you think it was set in waihau bay in 1984. write about how the director showcases the idea.

  1. Boy is about a boy growing up in a small town and lives with lots of siblings and his nana. His mum had died when she was younger and he cant wait for his dad to come back. When his dad comes back he wants to be just like him and does everything the same. Boy then relises that his dad is not a very good person and still wants to be like him but has started to relise what he is actually like.

2. I found rocky interesting because he didn’t talk much but said the right thing at the right time. I liked how he wanted to have super powers and i loved the was the drawing represented what he was trying to do.

3. A scene I found very interesting was when right at the end when the two boys found there dad at there mothers grave and just sat there and the rickey said “so how was japan”. I found this interesting because the dad seemed normal and wasn’t on drugs or drunk he was just sitting there.

4. I think a big message the director was trying to get across was the way kids back in those days grew up because I don’t think us New Zealanders understand what it was like and still is like for poor families in small towns in NZ. Tiki wiatiti also showed how much the kids can get influenced to be like there parents or older siblings such as Boy wanting to be like his dad and drinking beer and trying cigarets which I think is not good at all because the whole cycle starts again and keeps going on and on.

5. I really like how the thoughts of different people in the film had different ways of getting shown such as with Rockey the little boy, his thoughts got shown in drawings which were normally about his super powers and were stop motion which I believe added more effect. Another example is how Boy himself gets his mind shown through Michael Jackson dancing and it was normally his dad that was the one dancing.

6.I think it’s a good show case for the way poor NZ families grew up back then. The place that this film was set in shows this very well because it’s a very small town withs lots of gangs and knowbody has that much money and there is lots of drugs. The time it was set was very good as well because it tied in with what the story line was on and showcased the point the director was trying to get across very well because of that.

Hi Sam,

This is a good start. Look to add more depth to your work. Reflect on Waititi’s intention behind every element and integrate this in your work.
